Giveaway Monday: The Revised Fundamentals of Caregiving

It’s Monday, which means we’re just a bit more than a week away from the publication of Jonathan Evison’s highly acclaimed and greatly anticipated new novel, The Revised Fundamentals of Caregiving. And Monday means we’re giving away one copy of The Revised Fundamentals to one randomly chosen person. Just fill out the form below for your chance.

You don’t want to miss your chance because you don’t want to miss this book. Really. Here’s what Algonquin Executive Editor Chuck Adams has to say about The Revised Fundamentals of Caregiving:

When Algonquin published Johnny Evison’s last novel, West of Here, I kind of went out on a limb and said that it was the most exciting novel it had been my pleasure to publish in my long (long, long, long, long) career. And I wasn’t exaggerating—for me, that novel remains the most audacious, balls-out imaginative work of fiction that ever been my pleasure to edit. But nothing in that novel prepared me for the emotional impact I felt on reading Johnny’s latest, The Revised Fundamentals of Caregiving.

The novel’s narrator is a fellow named Benjamin Benjamin, and when we meet him his life is at a (very, very) low point. But rather than giving us a pity parade, showing us a morose man a-wallow in his misery, Johnny turns Benjamin into a hero of our time as he comes to terms with a life-shattering loss, and does so by putting his heart into taking care of others. As a certified caregiver, he takes on as his first charge an angry teenager named Trev who is slowly being paralyzed by muscular dystrophy. It is their relationship that provides the steady heartbeat of this story, and it is the bond that develops between them that gives the novel its emotional heft, as Benjamin finally allows himself to let go of the past and to realize that life, whatever it throws at you, is a joyful thing.

Now I confess that I’m a crusty cynic, one of the first to scoff at anything that reminds me even remotely of Lifetime movies or Hallmark cards. But damn it, I cried when I read The Revised Fundamentals of Caregiving, so invested as I was in the lives of these remarkable characters, people hanging on to the smallest flicker of hope and believing that eventually it will become the beacon that will guide them for the rest of their lives. And, thank god, I also laughed, because Johnny Evison has infused this story with genuine humor that runs the gamut from wry smiles to outright guffaws.

So be prepared to laugh, but also be prepared to be deeply moved. I love this book, and I think you will too. This is entertainment of the highest order.
