Publication day:The Receptionist

Janet Groth lived the Mad Men experience, minding the magazine and the men who created it for The New Yorker. From a lost Woody Allen to a marriage-proposing John Berryman to a still-lost Woody Allen to an ever-so-shy E.B. White. And more.

The Receptionist

An Education at The New Yorker

by Janet Groth

The girl in the booth: Yes, that’s Janet Groth at the ticket counter in this cover illustration for The New Yorker, just as she was at the reception desk for The New Yorker for 21 years.

From The Receptionist: “I thought of the forty or so idiosyncractic inhabitants of the eighteenth floor as ‘my writers’ and the six or so cartoonists billeted there as ‘my artists.” I watered their plants, walked their dogs, boarded their cats, sat their children–and sometimes their houses–when they went away. Of course, I also took their messages. Not required in the skill set, but over the years I received messages, too, along with impressions, confidences, and an education in a variety of subjects.”

Here, Janet Groth talks about the sights and scenes from her days at The New Yorker.
