Pub Day Giveaway: Dimestore by Lee Smith
“Place is paramount for me as a writer. I was lucky enough to grow up in a small coal mining town set deep in the rugged Appalachian mountains of southwest Virginia, very near eastern Kentucky, and very isolated in those days.”
In her first work of nonfiction, Lee Smith takes us back to her early days in the small coal town of Grundy, Virginia — and then she takes us beyond with that inimitable wit and wisdom of hers.
For forty-five years, her fiction has lived and breathed with the rhythms and people of the Appalachian South. But never before has she written her own story. Now she has given us Dimestore: A Writer’s Life.
Lee’s youth was a place of coal miners, tent revivals, mountain music, drive-in theaters, and her daddy’s dimestore. It was in that dimestore — listening to customers and inventing adventures for the store’s dolls — that she became a storyteller. Even when she was sent off to college to earn some “culture,” she understood that perhaps the richest culture she might ever know was the one she was driving away from — and it’s a place that she never left behind.
Take a trip back there with Lee’s Dimestore.

Sounds like a very intriguing homespun novel! So many books have come out of West Virginia detailing the lives of the men.. but, none come to mind.. when one thinks of the women. So, very curious to know what life was like growing up as a young woman in West Virginia back in the day!
I’ve read many Lee Smith books and would be so happy to win this one. Sounds like a real winner!
A long time fan of Lee Smith, I can’t wait to dip into Lee’s non-fictional Dimestore! This may be my lucky day!
