Ask an Algonquin Editor: Kathy Pories on the Bellwether Prize

Algonquin Books Senior Editor Kathy Pories talks about the Bellwether Prize, the publication prize founded by Barbara Kingsolver to recognize literature that addresses issues of social justice. Algonquin published two Bellwether Prize winners–Hillary Jordan‘s Mudbound and Heidi Durrow‘s The Girl Who Fell from the Sky–to great success. Mudbound has over 170,000 copies in print and The Girl Who Fell from the Sky has 140,000 copies in print. Both titles, which received a tremendous amount of critical fanfare, are book club favorites and have been selected as city reads and college reads around the country. We’ll be publishing a third Bellwether Prize winner, Naomi Benaron’s Running the Rift, in January 2012. Running the Rift is one of only six titles selected for Book Expo America‘s prestigious BEA Buzz Panel, so it’s already off to an auspicious start!

    I did not know that the Bellwether prize had been founded by Barbara Kingsolver. I have been pining away to read “Mudbound” – my uncle had a copy, and I read a couple of pages and was completely blown away. Also, “The Girl Who Fell From The Sky” has also been on my “to-read” list since I first set eyes on it via Goodreads. Now looking forward to reading “Running the Rift” by Naomi Benaron too. Thank you for introducing us to such great authors, and such fantastic books.

    I’ve read Mudbound, and totally fell in love with the book. I have not read “The Girl Who Fell From The Sky” Nor “Running the Rift” two more to put on my TBR list. I love finding new authors and books to read.
