Back to School Picture Day

Let’s go back to school — again — for school picture day. Today’s batch of adorable elementary-school-days photos will have you wistful for your Brownie uniform and haircut with bangs. (Remember, think twice before you get bangs cuts now. Not a good look for everyone.) While you’re thinking of the old days, go ahead and share one of your school photos with us on Facebook and Twitter.

Jill McCorkle, author of the upcoming novel, Life After Life, thinks back on her favorite parts of her school days (shown here in her second-grade school photo — look how cute!):

“My favorite school assignments were always bulletin boards and at-home projects: posters/paper mache/physical things that required glue and paint and coat hangers and dry cell batteries.

“My favorite reading assignments were those times in third and fourth grade when the teacher read to us. I was a big Beverly Cleary fan and so all of those books were what a lot of teachers read aloud. Free reading was the best, and I was devoted to the biography series in our library, Helen Keller and Marie Curie and Abraham Lincoln being my favorites. I also read all the dog and horse books: Misty of Chincoteague and Big Red, Old Yeller and Where the Red Fern Grows, which I read so often the librarian said I couldn’t check it out anymore that year.

“I loved elementary school because we did do creative writing, and then there was a long drought until I was in the eleventh grade and a teacher offered a semester of creative writing and a semester on the short story. That was my very best semester. We wrote a lot, and we read Poe and O. Henry and de Maupassant and Fitzgerald. We read Gatsby that year as well, and so I was totally into Fitzgerald.”
