Time: Always, forever, now showing.
Where: Hollywood, The Golden Era.
The Hosts: Mark Bailey and Edward Hemingway who have welcomed us all into their new book, Of All the Gin Joints. “This book is like being at the best dinner party in the world,” Chelsea Handler said.
The Guest List: Frank Sinatra, Mary Pickford, Joan Crawford, Bing Crosby, William Faulkner, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Humphrey Bogart, Ava Gardner, and you.
The Drink: Well, one of the drinks, the first cocktail ever ordered by James Bond in Ian Fleming’s first Bond novel, Casino Royale (1954):
Vesper Martini
3 oz. gin (preferably Tanqueray or Broker’s since Gordon’s has been reformulated)
1 oz. vodka
1/2 oz. Kina lillet
Lemon peel
Pour ingredients into a cocktail shaker filled with ice. Shake well, and then strain into a cocktail glass. Garnish with lemon peel. Enjoy! It’s a classic combination of 3 oz. gin, 1 oz. vodka, 0.5 oz. Kina Lillet and lemon peel garnish — shaken, not stirred.
