Meet Our New York City family
Algonquin Books of Chapel Hill was born, bred and remains right at home here in North Carolina amid rolling hills, vibrant literary culture and barbecue aplenty (oh, and the best college basketball around). But we are also very proud to be part of the Workman Publishing family. Our Southern voices harmonize beautifully with our New York City siblings.
So, we’re sharing a little peek at our family photo album today. Eighth-grader and intern Maddie Williams recently created a delightful blog post about the Humans of Workman, featuring Algonquin’s own wise and lovely publisher, Elisabeth Scharlatt (and no, we’re not saying that just because she’s the boss). Like so many folks at Workman, Elisabeth — she’s the one with the red scarf in the photo above and to the right here — has been with the house for more than 25 years and knows the company’s true spirit.
“In our old office there was a sign at the reception desk that said ‘Workman Publishing: Books, Calendars, Parties,’ and I remember that before the company got so big and the industry got so complicated, we had a lot of parties,” she said. “It was a much more informal company. As the business has grown, we’ve had to keep up with the digital world and the different ways that books are read and distributed. But we still have parties.”
And no family album would be complete without a photo from a special occasion. Intern Maddie happened to be there on the day Gabrielle Zevin, author of the New York Times bestseller The Storied Life of A. J. Fikry, stopped by to visit. Gabrielle is the one in the center holding a glass. (Oh, and that’s Carolan Workman, second from the left.)
Welcome to the family!
