Publication Day: When Tito Loved Clara by Jon Michaud

Today is a momentous occasion: the publication day of Jon Michaud’s debut novel When Tito Loved Clara, one of our favorite titles on our Spring 2011 list. And it’s not just because Jon is the world’s sweetest person (seriously, ask anyone)–it’s because his novel is A-M-A-Z-I-N-G. O: The Oprah Magazine and Entertainment Weekly both recently sang its praises. Need we say more?

Jon works by day as the Head Librarian at the New Yorker, and he frequently writes for the New Yorker blogs Back Issues and The Book Bench. The New Yorker Book Club heartily recommends When Tito Loved Clara for March reading. We couldn’t agree more.

If you live in the NYC area, be sure to catch Jon at his book launch reading tomorrow, March 9, 7:00 pm at the one and only, The Strand. You can see his full tour schedule here.

Here’s what people are saying about the book:

“Jon Michaud perfects a tale as old as time in When Tito Loved Clara—when young love fails to conquer the tumultuous environment it battles. In his narrative he intertwines the struggles of living an immigrant life and the heartbreak of losing a first love when another life path beckons… When Tito Loved Clara invites readers to take an introspective look at their own lives, as they will find parts of themselves in the events surrounding Tito and Clara’s young love, separation and later reunion as life takes its inevitable course.”—BookPage

“This is a hard worked and heartfelt novel, packed with strong characters and vivid scenes, and it foretells of more interesting material sure to come from this debut novelist.”—New York Journal of Books

“Its emotional insight and character development are first rate… Michaud’s quiet account of a foundering marriage and his forays into the mind of an abused child and her adult self are perfectly done.” –Booklist

“In this deeply affecting and exquisitely written novel, Jon Michaud explores the nature of love and family—and weaves a tale that will forever linger in the imagination.”—David Grann, author of The Lost City of Z

“Jon Michaud’s openhearted, soulful novel is a love story set in the Dominican community of Inwood, at the north end of Manhattan, but that’s not all it is: it’s also a multi-generational portrait of a family and the community around it; a joint meditation on contemporary manhood and, even more powerfully, contemporary womanhood; and a collection of delicately paced, astutely observed scenes that illuminate the way that people hide and reveal, hurt and heal.”— Ben Greenman, author of What He’s Poised to Do and Please Step Back
