Comet’s Tale

How the Dog I Rescued Saved My Life

by Steven D. Wolf

A note from Amy Gash, Algonquin Senior Editor:

Here’s a secret: I was the under-bidder on Marley & Me. From the first pages of John Grogan’s manuscript, I knew he had written something very special, but Algonquin didn’t win the auction for the book, and I went home without this pet project. So, for almost a decade now I’ve been on a mission to make up for that loss and bring Algonquin its own bestselling dog book. As you know, in the years since Marley was published, a whole genre of “dogoir” has sprung up. But believe me, not all dog stories are the same. You don’t even want to know how many we rejected before I fell madly in love with Comet’s Tale by Steven Wolf.

For me, Comet’s Tale has everything: a remarkable dog (the first-ever greyhound to become a service dog), a beautifully written narrative of change and redemption, and a back story about abused greyhound racers that is heartbreaking but also, in Comet’s case, heartwarming. In fact, this is a book that can make even the toughest of men go soft and mushy. To wit: Craig Johnson, author of the bestselling Longmire series and no stranger to grizzled cowboys and dead bodies-plus, he’s quite a tough guy himself-loves this book: “The story of Steven Wolf and his rescuer, Comet, is one of the best I know. I’m glad Comet saved Wolf’s life so he could write this marvelous book.”

I have no doubt that you will fall in love with this remarkable dog. And with your support and enthusiasm, I hope that we can collectively share Comet’s inspiring story and help raise awareness of the plight of these magnificent animals.

  1. Cant’t wait to read this.

  2. Emotions are only as powerful as the words that cause them. Words the most powerful tool, weapon or course of judgment in voicing and relating to the changing world around us. May we choose our words wisely. Though more importantly may they be heard seen and read for what they really are LIFE

  3. I picked up an advance copy at the Northern California Independent Booksellers Assoc. last week, and couldn’t put it down. Wonderful.
