Giveaway Thursday: The High Divide

Enger_High Divide_jkt_rgb_LRIs there anything lingering in your past that you deeply regret? How well do you know the people you love? Have you ever woken up, abandoned by the person who is supposed to take care of you? How far would you go to get them back? These are all questions Lin Enger brings to the foreground in his new novel, The High Divide.

And we raise still one more question: Will you fill out this form below to enter for a chance to win a copy of The High Divide?

In 1886, Gretta Pope wakes one morning to discover that her husband is gone. Ulysses Pope has left his family behind on the far edge of Minnesota’s western prairie with only the briefest of notes and no explanation for why he left or where he’s headed. It doesn’t take long for Gretta’s sons, Eli and Danny, to set off after him, following the scant clues they can find, jumping trains to get where they need to go, and ending up in the rugged badlands of Montana.

Gretta has no choice but to search for her sons and her husband, leading her to the doorstep of a woman who seems intent on making Ulysses her own. Meanwhile, they boys find that the closer they come to Ulysses’ trail, the greater the perils that confront them, until each is faced with a choice about whom he will defend, and who he will become.

Enger’s story is a beautifully told work of historical fiction about one man’s struggle for self acceptance, and the effect it has on his family. The novel is both an intimate account of a family’s journey, and a sweeping look at a little-known snapshot of American history.

  6. I was lucky to win a copy of the Fall Algonquin Reader in which an excerpt of this book was featured and fell in love with the author’s description of how the journey of writing this novel began with a family legend and how it leant itself to a topic he had always wanted to write about. I was excited too, by the character of Eli and the letter which arrives to give him direction on his search. In just a few pages I was hooked. Thank you for the chance to win a copy of a book I know I would love to get my hands on!
